How To Create An Awesome Glossary For Your WordPress Blog #MyBlogU

Sharing is caring!

blog-glossaryWe have already chatted about one useful content addition to your site: Niche FAQ.

This time we have a new idea: Create an indepth glossary.

While FAQ answers popular questions and attracts new users seeking answers to those questions, a Glossary engages current readers by explaining niche terms and linking to a more detailed explanation.

What Is a Glossary?

A glossary, in its most basic form, is a collection of useful terms and definitions. It is there to help the reader (or visitor, in this case) learn more about a topic that they may or may not have extensive knowledge about.

Any website that seeks to inform the reader could potentially benefit from having a glossary available. Luckily, there are tools out there now that make it pretty easy to build one. Especially if you have a blog hosted on WordPress.

  1. CM Tooltip Glossary – If you don’t want anything as static as a glossary page, you can choose the alternative of a hover style glossary instead. This plugin allows a reader to hover over a term and have a definition box appear over the text. So they can learn what a word means without leaving the page.
  2. WordPress Glossary Plugins – This is a similar plugin to the one above, but the hover box it creates is larger, more solid, and allows visuals to display the concept in action. It is a lot less sleek than CM Tooltip, but it is still a great tool. Especially if you need more space.
  3. Encyclopedia/Glossary/Wiki – While it can be used for several styles of glossary, this plugin’s best feature is far and away the Wiki generator. If you have seen Wikis that pop up for TV shows, or games, or anything else, this is likely the plugin that was used for it.
  4. WP – Glossary –  Prefer to hotlink? Then this plugin is the perfect one for you. It allows you to create hyperlinked terms through the text and send your reader to a section of the page with more information.

Quick and Dirty Tips For The Best Glossary Ever

  1. Assume Your Readers Know Nothing
  2. Ask Yourself If Your Definitions Really Explain
  3. Use Visuals
  4. Hyperlink, Hyperlink, Hyperlink
  5. Provide Resources For Further Reading

Conclusion

In the end, creating a glossary takes very little effort thanks to the many tools provided these days. Especially for WordPress sites, which are already optimized to be as simple and user friendly as possible.
